Interview: G.E. Smith

By Roman Warmke - 8/13/2000

The name may not grab you, but the face is one of the most exposed of all time. G.E. Smith, an incredibly adept and influential guitarist is best known for his role as the leader of the Saturday Night Live Orchestra for ten years, from 1985 to 1995.

With his ponytail and devious grin, G.E. Smith has made an impression on anyone who has a t.v. set, lighting up the sound tubes with his smooth but rockin' style of blues that has led him to jam with some of the most influential musicians of our generations.

Folks like Mick Jagger, David Bowie, Bob Dylan, Eddie Van Halen, Rickie Lee Jones, and Johnny Winter have all sough out G.E.'s expertise, and not a one of them has ever been disappointed.

G.E's. road to Saturday Night Live started with a stint on Broadway, as the guitarist for Gilda Radner's show "Gilda Live". The two became good friends, and soon were married. Gilda went to SNL, and G.E. went on the road as the axeslinger for the blue eyed combo Hall & Oates for six years, (79-85), where together they produced such hits as "Private Eyes", "Kiss Is On My List", and "Man Eater".

"It was insanely fun", G.E. exclaims. "We were so big that one year, we decided we would perform during summer - all year round!. We toured the northern hemisphere in the summer and the southern hemisphere during New York's winter."

In 1985, Live Aid and Farm Aid occurred, where G.E. and the Hall & Oates band ended up backing a lot of other musicians for those two shows as well.

"I ended up being the de facto music director for a lot of what went on, as we backed Mick Jagger, Tina Turner, and whoever didn't have a band."

After the benefit concerts, G.E.'s reputation as a creative workhorse was solidified, and when Hall & Oates decided to take a break in 1985, G.E. was named the music director for Saturday Night Live by producer Lorne Michaels. G.E. comments, "I was thrilled to take it."

Through the ten year stint on America's television sets, G.E. won a Emmy for his role, and worked with every top notch musician on the planet.

G.E. also scored a smash hit in his songwriting department, when actor/comedian Mike Meyers employed G.E.'s expertise in writing a theme song for a little skit he called "Wayne's World."

"Aerosmith was the musical guest that week", G.E. explains, "so Mike and I sat down and wrote a song that Aerosmith could play and sing with."

As we all know, Wayne's World became an international super smash hit, and the soundtrack went platinum. Party on, Excellent!

As if that wasn't enough for any musician's resume, G.E., while working for SNL, also toured with the legendary Bob Dylan, as a guitarist in his band. "I was tiiiired", Smith later said.

Other credits during that time frame included being hired as the music director for the 1988 Emmy Awards, the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in Cleveland, and Bob Dylan's 30th Anniversary Concert at Madison Square Garden.

Smith says of this event, "I was rehearsing with George Harrison in the morning, Eric Clapton in the afternoon, and Lou Reed at night. One afternoon, I had Harrison, Tom Petty, Clapton, Neil Young, Dylan, and Roger McGuinn all lined up and I'm saying, 'O.k. George, you sing here, Eric you play now, Bob, you come in here."

After SNL, Smith went on and continues to act as a guest musician in many roles, however, he has found a voice with the G.E. Smith Band, which features former drummer from Wings, Steve Holley. The same group also backs up G.E.'s current wife, Taylor Barton.

G.E. also takes time out each summer to teach guitar workshops at Jorma Kaukonen's Fur Peace Ranch, located just past the Athens County border in Meigs County. A concert performance on August 19, with ex- Jefferson Airplane and current Hot Tuna bassist Jack Casady, and Cleveland area drummer Eric Diaz will highlight this year's visit to our area.

"I've had an incredible ride in the world of Rock 'N Roll and American music", smith reflects, "but I'm looking forward to recording and releasing my solo material."

Information on the G.E. Smith Concert can be obtained by calling 740-992-7595, or by visiting the Fur Peace Ranch website, located at www.furpeaceranch.com

G.E. Smith, Musical TURD
Mr. FACE,
Pompous BUTT, whatever slang you wanna call this talentless twerp will do. When he took over the SNL band slot, my brother and were always amused at how he had to always get his Big Puss in the camera while showing off his guitar and amplifier collection ! He would have been far better off showcasing some of his highky talented band members than demanding that his ugly mug be way up front in the camera, while sooooo generically playing some old guitar licks...

It was always as if he was saying " Hey .. look at me with this old Gibson and old Fender amp ! ... HEY look at me.. I am FOlksy as I have a Gibson f-5 mandolin and as I am faking some bluegras licks , while my feeble voice whimper's out an old Grateful Dead song that I hope no one will recognize..
Look at me !!! Make sure you put my long faced puss in the camera while I pick out a few lame licks ....

Geeze.. I read that ONE PARAGRAPH aticle years ago in Guitar Player Magazine where they Slammed G.E. for being such an Egotistical Pompous ASS !!

How true...

I would MUCH rather watch "Stefan" with his silly B.S. Infomercial, than listen to AnYTHING by "The Face"...

At least "Stefan" is a great laugh !!

Get A job G.E.,
YOU DIDNT MAKE IT !

To Anonymous Loser
I took a couple of guitar workshops with G.E. and found him to be extremely talented and humble, and a really nice guy to spend time with. He had nothing but good things to say about other players. He doesn't claim to be Steve Vai or Joe Satriani. He plays a lot of old blues that he loves and is helping to pass along the tradition. The shows he put on with Jack Cassady and Eric Diaz were excellent!

I'm not sure who dropped you on your head or pissed in your beer, but you have a serious problem. Stop whining about other players and work on improving yourself. In other words . . . grow up. The only thing I agree with about your posting is your name . . . loser.

G.E Smith the best
Ge smith You are great and when you play the blues the hair on my arms stand up. Ive always herd you and I could pass for twins, But your guitar playing wins. Robert Werthner N.Y,

Eh Shaddap!
Alright, first off. Let's get this straight: The word loser better never appear ANYWHERE around my buddy, G.E.!! The guy's been playin guitar looong before you knew what one was! Secondly he's paid his dues and has nothin to prove to ANYONE! Whenever he's played behind other great musicians/guitarists he's always just played along and never tried to blow anyone off the stage. I learned alot off him as a guitarist and it helped shaped me into a better player IMHO.
I think it takes alot of ignorance and incompetence to post what you said cause I've seen him quite a few times already and If people want to see and hear a guitarist who is as soulful as it gets: He's the man in my opinion.
If he has an ego, why are his shows only $20 and he's always around the clubs to meet and talk to. He's a wonderful human being and let's see any other famous guitar players out there hang around in a public environment for fans to meet and chat with. You don't need VIP to get to know his dude!
If you have an opinion, fine, but keep it to yourself! And if this was a joke.....I'm not laughing!

Anyway G.E. Still rocks and plays blues like a motha.... so kiss my white butt, word to yo mutha!

G.E.: THE BEST THERE IS, WAS, and EVER WILL BE!

G.E. kicks off the never ending tour!!!
Thank -you G.E. for being such an influential force in driving the ship with Bob dylan into uncharted waters...after years of bob's foraying into big bands and backing singers, 1988 saw an explosion of energetic musical rapture , in no small part thanks to G.E.'s duties as a guitar player/ band leader...1990 (well most of 1990) was even better still...the european shows (london's hammersmith in particular) were astounding...all music fans and bob dylan fans owe G.E. thanks for sparking such a revolution in Bob's live shows...thank-you - Otis (vancouver b.c. )

He'll be back, on SNL that is
G.E. SMITH RULES!! He should be admired by everyone and not scorned by jerks worldwide. G.E. Smith and his wife, Taylor Barton, are the best thing in music since Ashford and Simpson, and there's no stopping them.

If any of you disagree with me, then tough luck dillweed. :P

You are a rock and roll 'god'!
I have loved you and your work since 1983 (Hall & Oates) and you have been the 'only' front man for SNL! Without you there, it only seem that 'wanna-be's' have been trying to fill the talented shoes that you and Tom 'T-Bone' Wolk have left behind for them! It's not the same but at least the re-runs live on!

It was such a thrill..
To be at the NAMM show in Anaheim today, walk up to the Fender booth and see you there jamming away. I am such a big fan of your work; thanx for being there and giving me the opportunity to hear you live.

Amazing guitar talent!!!
I've always been incredibly impressed since the first time I heard GE with the Hall & Oates band...and even more pleasantly surprised throughout the SNL years. This is not a showoff who has to get his face on camera every chance he gets but a true guitar talent who truly LOVES what he does, and like Paul Shaffer, has gotten to work among the best names out there. I feel very lucky to have had a copy of "In the World" since its release...a real find and enjoyable from start to finish. Let the detractors accomplish what GE has if they have any complaints. They can only wish to have had as many accomplishments. Rock on GE!

The Man!!!
I would say that SNL hasn't been the same without G.E. but truth be told I stopped watching after he left. My fondest memory of the show were the episodes where he had a high presents. He played with such passion... I wanted to jump through the screen. I hope more is done make him a household name to those who aren't familar with him and his talent.

#10 by Trina R. on Apr 10, 2007 12:00:00 AM

GE Is the Man
I always thought GE's smirk was his way of sharing his passion with others.

Eddie VH may have taught me how to impress..But GE taught me how to play and fit in with a band.

In addition, I always thought he added a true visual element to Hall and Oates.. I mean, who was this dude with slicked back hair mugging it up while blazing away..Or who was this guy in the Bowie "Fashion " video staring into the camera while chewing gum...

Also, I recently viewed on YouTube the GE Telecaster Video...WOW...This guy is making me want to buy a Telecaster...Don't know him but comes through on the presentation as a very humble, Happy, cool guy..That could sell his Telecaster to anyone...Passion.

Thanks GE!!!!

schmoozer
GE always struck me as a phony, maybe that was just his game face, but after reading all the kind words from so many, I am sure he can fool a lot of people a lot of the time, never really like the way he played, but it sounds like a lot of people think he is pretty good. I don't see it. Maybe he is a real nice guy, more power to him!
