The Friends of Kyle Benefit
By Dan Erlewine, Scott Winland, Matt Toledo - 1/8/2001
Editor's Note: Dan Erlewine is an Athens resident, guitar repairman, musician, and worker for "The Committee for The Friends of Kyle"
Recently five-year-old Kyle Hellyer of Glouster was diagnosed with Fanconi's Anemia, a rare blood disorder that keeps his bone marrow from producing enough red or white blood cells and platelets to sustain life.
The news was heartbreaking for Kyle's family and those who know them.
Kyle, his parents Kelly and Dave, and his eight year-old brother Justin are lifetime residents of the area, and live in Glouster. Kyle's mom, Kelly, is a receptionist with Drs. Riestenberg, LaVelle and Welsh. It was at the dentist office in October that Dan Erlewine heard about "The Friends of Kyle"- a four-month fund raiser spearheaded by the huge effort of Dr. Timothy Lavelle. Dan was waiting in Dr. Lavelle's chair to get a loose filling repaired when he overheard talk in the office about Kyle's condition, and the upcoming fundraising efforts.
Touched, Dan Erlewine offered the help of the musical community, with whom he is well-connected. Come out and hear some great music, have fun, and help us show that music lovers care.
All proceeds raised from ticket sales and donations at the musical venues will go toward paying Kyle's medical bills and related expenses. Any remaining proceeds will go into a trust fund for his future needs.
The show is being held Saturday, January 27th at 4 venues in Athens simutaneously.
$8 gets you an all access pass that lets you visit all the clubs participating in this event without having to pay a cover at each bar. $4 gets you into just one bar. The Jorma show is $8 and includes the all access pass.
Baker Center Frontroom 7:00: Bruce Dalzell and Jorma Kaukonen Show starts at 7:00
Here's the perfect opportunity for OU students and local residents and their families to hear Jorma Kaukonen. The man who named the Jefferson Airplane and now fronts the Hot Tuna Band, Jorma lives in nearby Meigs County and has become a favorite on the rare occasions when he plays in town-find out why! Hosted by Bruce Dalzell.
Ohooley's Irish Pub 8:30: JD Hutchison - Retro-Grass - Misprints - Nightbirds - Frank McDermot
Local legend, musical guru, and nationally-acclaimed singer-songwriter JD Hutchison starts the night off early and then teams-up for some real bluegrass with the band "Retro-Grass." Though once a famed bluegrass musician (The Hutchison Brothers Band of the 1970s), today JD Hutchison rarely performs in the traditional bluegrass style-don't miss it! Followed by two of Athens finest rock bands, The Misprints and the Nightbirds! Both of these bands have been reviewed on the AMN. Click on their names to read more about them.
Casa Nueva 10:00: Geraldine - Jet Lucas - Knives - We March - Killdorados
Geraldine, recently signed to Orange Recordings, plays honest high energy rocknroll. They combine elements of early blues and soul with the best parts of 70s 80s punk rock and a dash of British invasion stuff for good measure. Self described as "Pure Bastard Rock," these guys are about to release a CD of the same name.
Jet Lucas are a great local 3 piece with a sound that is best described as a lunchroom brawl between Sonic Youth and Unsane which spills out of the cafeteria and into yet another, unrelated elementary school playground fight between Sabbath and the 1910 Fruitgum Company. Yeah.
The Knives are a recent addition to the Athens music scene. They play very catchy energetic songs with foot stomping rhythms and sing along choruses. Fans of brainiac and the Make Up will love this band which features Steve Schmoll (formerly of the band, Lazy).
We March is comprised of Athens teens who play supercharged punk rawk! These guys have already finished 2 self released disks.
Fans of Man's Ruin type stoner rock will dig The Killdorados. They are super loud and heavy and feature Pat Brown, and Jon Spataro of the Royales as well as former Geraldine and Spiveys drummer Brandon Robinson.
Union Bar 10:00: Parker Ben Parker, Keaton, Ran, Planet 12, and The Meshback Hats
Parker Ben Parker recently released a CD entitled "...in order to speak with you" which has gained critical regional acclaim. With some obvious Radiohead influences, Parker Ben Parker's music is best described with words like: "beautiful," "warm," "harmonious," and "emotional."
Keaton is aggressive rock and roll for the kids.
Ran is a local, no-apologies, ambient, alternative-rock trio who's tunes manage to encapsulate you in a warm blanket of sonic fuzz. Ran is in the process of recording their first CD but have some clips available on this site. Their drummer was interviewed by the AMN.
Planet 12 is a female-fronted local power-pop, alt-prog act that has been busy playing gigs in Columbus at venues like Little Brothers, Oldfields, and the Northberg as well as Lancaster. Expect quirky time changes, hooks, strange chords and a slight hint of grunge.
The Meshback Hats are a hilarious 2-piece act that craft fun songs from Nintendo Gameboy music. Definite drunken crowd pleasers, these guys perform with stacks of meshback hats on their heads.
