Diamonds are a Musicians best Friend
By John Lucas Patt - 7/26/2001
When people think about summer, one of the first images that often comes to mind is the 'backyard barbeque'. A harmless little event comprised of some family, a few friends, and the usual picnic items. It turns out to be such a good time that it quickly becomes a yearly summer tradition. Before you know it, friends are inviting other friends, the neighbors get in on the action, more family members show up, and these seemingly innocent little get-togethers begin to grow beyond their initial small, and manageable proportions. So what do you do when your nice little backyard fun becomes to much to handle? Well, if you're Nick Collura, owner of the INSEA Sound Shop, you book 9 bands to play, charge admission, and start calling your little party "The Diamond Festival".
The Second Annual Diamond Festival will be held on Saturday, August 18th at the INSEA Sound Shop. The Sound Shop is located in Diamond, Ohio just west of Nelsonville on rt. 33. Last years event hosted a crowd of nearly 300, and Nick expects even more for this years show.
"We may have to park cars at Dee's Diner, and run a shuttle bus to pick people up for this years Festival", Nick says with a grin.
A wide variety of bands and musical performers are scheduled for this year. The music starts at 3pm with solo acoustic folk artist Casey Redmond. Taking the stage second, at 4pm, will be a classic rock act called "Three Chords and a Beer". Next up is the folk punk sounds of "Psuedo" at 5pm. Fourth on the bill is "Noah Ziggy", a heavy psychedelic band who won the battle of the bands contest on OU South Green this past spring.
The Athens based prog- rock/alterna-metal band "Akimbo" (website) will hit the stage at 7pm. This will be the debut performance for "Akimbo" with the recent addition of Heath Bowers on drums. Following "Akimbo", will be a country/rock band from Logan called "5A.M.", which includes former Direct Attention bassist Bruce Tong.
Next up will be "Without Papers". This is an original rock act fronted by Nick himself. "Without Papers" will also be appearing at the Athens Co. Fair on August 11th , along with the Wellston based rockers "We Don't". At 10pm will be the pop rock sounds of "Red Road Travelers", and closing out the show at 11pm will be the rock sounds of "Three Sided Soul", a band in which Nick takes over on bass, and includes former Girth guitarist Brian Adams on lead guitar.
Once again, it's Saturday, August 18th for what may well be the biggest event of the summer. Gates open at noon, and admission will be three dollars. Bring your own beverage, a covered dish, and your favorite sittin' chair.
