Web Promotion 101 for Bands

By Doug Fry - 8/29/2001

Editors Note: Doug Fry plays guitar and sings in the band, We Don't.

So. You're in a great band and you've just completed your first web site Yes! All that hard work at the keyboard, with your cramped fingers crouching over the mouse, has finally paid off. Just like magic you and your band mates type in the www. and away you go to your special place on the web. Then, after a few days of bliss, you decide to try a few search engines to see if they find your band. After all, it is a great band and should be easy to distinguish from the other 650 gazillion other unsigned bands on the web, but something is wrong. None of the engines can find you! What is it?

Sound familiar? This is basically what I went through last year when I established the first web page for my band WE DON'T (www.we-rock.net) a southern Ohio rock group. Here's some very basic advice that might help you if you are still in the early stages of developing you "web presence."

a. Content is King! All search engines use text to execute searches, so use your core message on each page.

b. Register your domain name. This is your www address and must be bought before you "own" it.

c. Easy on the graphics. Content is king, and lots of "white space" or other plain backgrounds helps the reader. Plus, simple pages load faster and are more pleasing to view.

d. Register your site with search engines. 90% of web traffic is generated by Yahoo and Alta Vista, so be sure to register there. I suggest sites like www.addme.com that use a submission robot to help you and are FREE.

e. Use reciprocal links. Simply link to related sites, and more importantly have them link to your site.

f. Join Web Rings. Yahoo and others offer "rings", "banner exchanges" and other methods of free promo.

g. Vary the content weekly or at least monthly (a' la' Athens Musician Network). This brings return readers.

h. Use Meta Tags. These html "markers" help search engines navigate through your site.

i. Promote the site. This means on and off the web too-cards, flyers, banners, CDs, T-shirts, on your guitar...anywhere.

I. Visit the WE DON'T site at (www.we-rock.net)

Good luck! Our WE DON'T site is weak in my opinion, that's why I keep working on it (yuuuk, gotta change that background). Although, I do suggest trying our provider Yahoo Geocities for a great free provider of hosting for your site. They provide enough free space for several mp3 files and graphics. Plus, they have no problem linking your domain to their geocities page if you want. Happy surfing!

mr cool
Wow, check out that smooth lookin dude with the rock star shades ;)

A Website Tip for You
purple wavy background = ugly and unreadable

learn to make a decent page before you write a how to
you can tell the AMN is hurting for content when pieces like this get published. the full name of this band is probably "we don't understand web design" Christ! What awful crap.

Negativity gets you nowhere!
Ok, Ok, so you want to blast WE DON'T (www.we-rock.net)!
Maybe you should spend your energy making your project better, instead of throwing stones, my friend.
I admit our website is weak compared to most, however these tips may save you/others from some headaches I encountered while trying to get it established (I learned the HARD WAY, by trial & error). Afterall, I am a musician, not a webmaster! (You should judge me by listening to the mp3 files at we-rock.net) :-)

WE DON'T rocks Nelsonville, Gallipolis, Lancaster, Athens
This is a great band, they rock your ass for over 3 hours and DON'T miss a beat.

Their original stuff is killer, check them out at the West End Tavern THIS MONTH. Their free mp3 files at we-rock.net are good quality.

Not sure if they are web experts!

i saw this band once
As far as locals go, most bands suck!

These guys were pros, and none of this 30 minutes and we're done with the show kids!
they played all night...

Good ideas for getting more hits! Thanks for sharing.
I read your article and you admit it needs visual work and you were sharing research you had done to save some us a little hassle. I appreciate that. You have great points about how to get a site noticed and found more easily. Whoever wrote that neg. crap doesn't realize if you site looks great and nobody sees it or hears your music... how good is it really????

hmmm
<p>I don't mean to be offensive, but few people are going to take advice from someone with a website as poor as the We Don't site. I'm no master of design myself, but there's a number of things about the site that stick out like a slutty hitchiker's leg. The layout isn't very intuitive; there's spelling, punctuation, and grammatical mistakes all over the place; the background is distracting; and it's difficult to locate exactly what you want without looking around the whole site (which could be good, I suppose, if you want people to look at the whole thing).
<p>
The tips in this article are all good promotional tips. However, few people are going to find reassurance by viewing the website that the author designed. My suggestion: check out some other sites that are good and go after their layout. Layout is very, very important. Some local band sites that I think are good: http://www.planet-12.com, http://www.cactuspears.com.
<p>
Of course, all my advice may be worthless. I've been working with the Internet professionally for four years, but that doesn't mean I know the slightest thing about web design. That's Toledo's area. ;-)
<p>
On the positive side, the music is pretty good. ;-) After all, anything with John Patt can't be too bad. So long as he doesn't dump Akimbo (one of my favorite local bands) for We Don't, then <i>I</i> don't think I'll mind. ;-)

Very good comments, but...
You may want to follow up with professional design services for your site(s). What is a better way to give your band credibility after you're finally found on the internet? There are too many groups I run across that spend all of their money in the studio, and get professional design work for their album cover and press kits, but they give up on producing a site at all, or it is done very shotty. This can bring your credibilty down quickly. Your site is just as important as your music, and it works for you 24/7 365 days a year (as long as you pay the bill, if you don't have a free site).
So, do your research and ask around. You don't need to spend a tone of money to get some help with your site design.
Also, stay away from using too much Flash programming. Many of your fans have slow connections on their home computers, and the search engines can't read the text.
That's all for now...
Thanks,
Coop
