Show Preview: A Day In The Life, When Sparks Fly
By Maggie Brown - 4/23/2003
The Beatles' 1967 "Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band" album ends with the song that critics from R.E.M. to Radiohead to the ultimate fans call "the best song from the best band."
The song merges a Lennon song with a McCartney song, with lyrics gathered from newspaper headlines, Lennon's filming of How I Won the War, and parts of conversations held or overheard.

Dayton's A Day in the Life shows tribute to the Fab Four's collaboration of distinctive sounds and simple inspiration by sharing their name with the noted song.

Blending pop-punk, emo, post hardcore and power rock, A day in the Life has been compared to national acts such as Saves The Day (whose founding member played with ADITL's drummer, Eron Bucciarelli, in Step Off) and Fairweather. The band makes the sound of the '60s and '70s fit in today's music world. There is no conformance to a genre definition.

After their first recording (a 4-song demo called "Four Bullets for One Girl") sold nearly 500 copies in 2 months, ADITL drew attention of the smaller label, Confined Records. With Confined's assistance, ADITL produced their first EP, "Nine Reasons to Say Goodbye," and recorded their newest EP, "Paper Chromatography: The Fade from Dark to Light," last winter.
Having recently appeared with Athens' own Remember Ender in Covington, ADITL will make their way down here on Saturday, April 26. Coming with ADITL is another band on the Combined Records label, When Sparks Fly.
Also out of Dayton, When Sparks Fly is an explosive melodic punk rock band with, believe it or not, a sense of humor.
Known for opening a show hard and ending it even harder, Sparks still manage parts of their songs to have the toughest guy in the back singing along in his sweetest voice.

Part of last summer's HessFest at Cleveland's Agora, Sparks had to opportunity to open the ballroom for Fairweather and Brandston.
This Saturday, When Sparks Fly will open the Front Room at 11 p.m. 2003 as part of Baker Night's "Coffeehouse Concert Series," with A Day in the Life to follow.
