It is spring in Athens. That means festival season
is upon us. With an incessant wave of new apartment complexes slowly
eating up what was once a nice size field on Palmer street, Highfest
seems poised to take it's place as the spring fest of choice for
seeing live bands. The festival has been going on for almost a
decade and is organized each year by residents of High Street and
North Lancaster Street in downtown Athens.

|
Highfest is located on the central west end of Athens, two blocks from Court Street. |
|
"This is only my first year living
on High street and I think that it is pretty much an assumed responsibility
that if you live here you have to throw a bash." stated event co-organizer, Devin Reily. "It was actually surprising to me because the University

|
pretty much was the first to help organize the
event. Everyone was mailed a letter from the dean of students Terry
Hogan, and they arranged a time and place for the residents to
meet and even offered free pizza and pop, which was my main incentive."
From that meeting, residents took up various responsibilities
to make the fest happen. One resident was put in charge of T-shirts,
another organized meetings with the Athens fire and police departments,
and Devin was asked to help put together bands.

Music will start sometime in the mid afternoon
and last until 11:00 PM. For those of you who don't know, there
is a noise ordinance in the city of Athens that states all loud
noises in residential neighborhoods need to stop by 11:00 PM at
which point the police can issue you a $80 ticket and all they
have to do is drive around the block once to issue you another,
and another, and so on.
The Schedule of bands is as follows:
