Welcome OU Pre-College students! Thanks for taking up all the parking spots (sarcasm) you can make up for it by going to see lots of live shows!
Hotdog Contest
This site is supposed to only cover music events in Athens, Ohio. However, there are some events that just need to be written about even if they have nothing to do with local music. One such event is the annual O'Betty's hotdog eating contest. It's an event so big; they had to expand the Casa Nueva Cantina just to hold it. This year's contest will be held Thursday August, 11 at 2:00 PM. The eating starts at 3:00 PM. Get there early if you want a seat. In previous years, the contest has been a standing-room-only event. You can see a video of last year's event on the AMN.

The Big One Fest
Speaking of large events... Curtis Manley, booking manager for The Blue Gator, has assembled what promises to be the largest outdoor music festival Athens, Ohio has ever seen. The Big One festival will feature over 70 bands on 8 different stages. The lineup has already been determined, so you're band can't get on the bill. The event is a personal project of Curtis which has no affiliation with the Blue Gator. However, a vast majority of the bands scheduled to perform The Big One have played at the Blue Gator within the last year. Local acts include: Southeast Engine, Homemade Parachutes (formerly known as Shotgun for Royalty), DJ Explosive, We March, Liz Pahl, Flinch, and more. The show is scheduled for September 17, 2005--just weeks after the start of Fall Quarter at Ohio University.

Tickets are available on the festival's website. The earlier you purchase your tickets, the cheaper the price.
The AMN needs responsible digital photographers and videographers to cover this historic event! You will get free admission, press pass, and will be paid a small fee upon completion of your work. The fee should at least the cost of a hotdog at the fest, remember: we're poor here at the AMN.
Athens Community Music Festival
Speaking of large events… seems like I just said that? The annual fundraiser / charity concert / festival known at the Athens Community Music Festival is slated for August 20th at 8 local venues. For the first time, local dance club Evolution will be included in the event. Other venues include: Donkey, Casa Cantina, The Blue Gator, O'Hooley's, The Smiling Skull, The Union, and The Front Room.
I'm very excited to announce that this year a portion of the proceeds will go to the Athens Musician Network! I was very surprised when I heard the news. What do I plan to do with the money? Any funds the AMN receives from this event will be used to fund our transition into a non-profit entity. Any remaining funds would be used help the AMN move forward to phase 2: renting a building so that local bands can practice free from the threat of noise violation tickets.
If you are going to the fest, please take your digital camera. I need people to take pictures of this event. Help out, and get some AMN participation points (which translate into stars by your name on the site. Check out the bulletin board to see what I mean)
