Joe Krause Booking Manager: Kent Lankas Venue Info Phone: 740-589-6062 Snail Mail: 19 S Court St Athens, OH 45701 |
Matt Says: In the January of 2007, Athens' only full time dance club, Evolution, changed focus under a new owner, Joe Krause. Krouse reportedly wants to turn the club into a live music venue. They still book dance nights and DJ's whenever possible. However, their new booking manager, Kent Lankas, has made an effort to start booking bands. So far, anything goes. However, early trends lean towards party bands, lots of cover bands, and non-indie rock and funk. The goal seems to be: book bands that people can dance to (or at least sing along to). This place is still trying to find itself, so don't be afraid to try and book a show. If you can bring a crowd, you may just be booked on a regular basis. The stage is tiny--about 11 feet wide by 5 feet deep--big enough for a three-piece. Four or more and things get tight. The sound system was designed by local sound man "Cullen" and is decent. The bar is a little too close to the stage to allow for much crowd interaction. The BBQ pit stays open late--always a plus. There is also a lower room done up all fancy like. Plus, the have a special VIP room that some bands can use if the crowd is decent enough. Load up is difficult. You can try and find a spot on Court Street (good luck) or you can pull around the alley, find the door to their porch, and load in from the rear. Bands make an unofficial guarantee of $75 for the entire night to start with. The more people you bring, the more you earn. KENT LIVES WAAAY OUT IN THE COUNTRY: hence the surfing internet is a slow, painful process for him. Call for booking. Better yet, stop by the bar. Matt Says: It used to be a church. Now it's a large, modern, and clean art space. The former church still looks a lot like a church. It's carpeted floors, arched ceilings, and soft pews are great for acoustics. It can comfortably hold two hundred people, possibly more, and the best part is... this place has it's own parking lot! Rooms in the basement can be rented out to bands looking for a place to practice. They advertise on their myspace page that they like community theater, local musicians, and noise shows. In fact, it is the home of a monthly noise jam. Bands can load up in the back of the church by the parking lot. There are handicap ramps. Their sound system is a little under powered and is only good for amping the vocals and very little else. Keep your volume reasonable on stage so the audience can hear your singer. Seats kill dancing, but if you can inspire them to stand, its a really fun time! Random AMN User Comments: Poop-o-Meeter: (Can you poop here?) Matt Says: The new Baker Center Ballroom opened in January 2007. The new ballroom has a carpeted floor which is a major improvement over the old ballroom. Hopefully the carpet will cut down on the massive reverb issues big name acts had at the old ballroom. This venue is brand spankin' new, can hold hundreds of people, and is a great place to see well known college rock bands, big-time-small-time bands, or regional favorites. The old Baker Center Ballroom was host for such bands as the Dead Milkmen, The Dismemberment Plan, and Murder By Death... boy that sounds scary, but some of those bands are actually quite mellow at times. Many time these major label bands play with local support. Random AMN User Comments: Poop-o-Meeter: (Can you poop here?) Visuals: [ 3 photo albums ] [ 3 video clips ] AMN User Ranking:

Matt Says: According to the Ohio University website "This general purpose theater has 240 seats and high-end audio-visual capabilities. It will be most suitable for films, speakers, panel discussions, formal presentations, as well as hosting a comedian or a concert. The theater is the home of Office of Admissions Information Sessions for prospective students and their families." It is a nice place to play. Unfortunately, it has seats. From a performer's perspective, seats can kill a band's energy. The sound booth has no direct passage to the stage. The sound man has to exit the booth, catch an elevator or an escalator, and walk all the way to the stage. As such, tiny adjustments like a bad mic or a bad cable are very annoying to fix. During large events, they pass out walkie-talkies to the stage crew so the sound man doesn't have to take a two minute walk from the sound booth to the stage. However, if your show was booked by a third party, chances are they just paid for a single sound man. Band accommodations are ample. They have back-stage dressing rooms, showers, and even room for catering if you hire one. It's a first-class venue. Random AMN User Comments: Poop-o-Meeter: (Can you poop here?) Matt Says: The Blue Gator downstairs is one of the newer venues in Athens. Terry Anderson (the guy who was held prisoner in Lebanon for years) and Joel Schechtman recently purchased the 2 story Swindlfish Saloon and turned it into two venues. The upstairs stage is huge (for Athens) and recently renovated. Downstairs was completely remodled to accomodate bands. Anyone who remembers how nasty and piss-laden the downstairs used to be will be totally taken aback by how fantastic the downstairs now looks. A total and complete overhaul was done. The stage is of moderate size, but located in a corner (READ: triangle shaped stage). The oddly shaped stage might throw some performers for a loop because the sound on stage is going two directions at once. People eat dinner and drink during some shows. Big name blues acts are slated to play the bar. Blues (in all it's forms), Jazz (also in all it's forms), Swing, and Country are the staples of the Blue Gator. They also serve moderately priced Cajun food. It's a classy joint. Random AMN User Comments: Poop-o-Meeter: (Can you poop here?) Visuals: [ 16 photo albums ] [ 3 video clips ] AMN User Ranking:

Matt Says: The Blue Gator's upstairs is the largest venue in Athens. As such, they have a particular need to fill the venue with bands that draw well. Bands that are just starting out will more than likely not be able to get booked here on a weekend unless it is a special event or part of a larger bill. Bands like Red Wanting Blue, Guest, Ordinary Peoples, The Recipe, Tab Benoit, OAR, Ekoostik Hookah and others have played the Gator upstairs. If you're not from the region and these names don't ring a bell, all you need to know is that Jam, Funk, Blues, Hip-Hop, radio friendly Pop, or any mixture of the above seem to do well at this venue. Original music is favored over cover bands. The sound system is excellent and is easily the best in town, with separate monitor mixes for each monitor, a huge subwoofer under the stage, and the ability to record shows (ask the soundman ahead of time). The stage is a little small for a venue this large, and visually bland. Black tiles above and a plain wall behind you. If you play, you may want to spice it up with something interesting to look at or bring some lights. Smaller bands can try getting a Wednesday gig at the Gator. They have a dollar cover charge night modeled closely after another local bar in town, the Union, which also features new acts on Wednesday. The owners of this bar also own a few other store fronts in town. They plaster flyers for Gator Shows all over these properties. You're show will be well publicized if you get them material on time and don't change things around on them. Despite the large name acts, or because of it, the upstairs doesn't have a "built in crowd" yet. This may change over time. In the mean time, your band should make some effort to promote the show beyond just the fliers. Random AMN User Comments: Poop-o-Meeter: (Can you poop here?) Matt Says: I have to give kudos to this place for wanting to feature local music. I also have to congratulate it for being one of the few bars in Athens that offers local acts a guarantee. Rumor has it at about $200.00 though you should verify it with the managers when you get booked. Unfortunately, there is no sound system except what the band brings and you play on an elvated floor where tables used to be just hours earlier. Music was obviously an afterthought in a bar that was designed specifically for watching sports. Their advertising campaign says "Wings Beer Sports... all the essentials" Notice that live music is not on the list. Matt Says: Casa is arguably the prettiest bar in Athens with it's curved wood surfaces and 3-D brick work. It's clean and has character. The acoustics are fantastic for musicians because all the odd angles in the architecture disperse the sound evenly. The bar owns a fantastic new sound system complete with compressors, limiters, separate monitor mixes, automatic feedback suppression, and way more power than they'll ever need. They now arguably have the best sound system in Athens. Local and national folk heroes like Dave Childers, punk bands like We March, and popular national underground acts like The Avett Bros. have all graced the stage. The bar has also been the home of previous hip-hop shows. Basically, anything goes. If you're not familiar with any of these bands, all you need to know is that just about any type of music flies at Casa. Everything from Folk, to Metal, to rock, to jam, to hip-hop, to emo, to indie. It's an 18 and over venue (with ID). If you want to get booked, contact Tim Peacock via email. He's a professional booking agent who books national Americana acts in Nelsonville (like the Squirrel Nut Zippers, among may others) on a regular basis. Tim also plays stand up bass in various bands. They serve food during the day and early evening. A giant plus for playing this venue is that there really isn't much else to do in Pomeroy on the weekend. So unless you suck realy hard, people will show to see you. The bar prides itself on booking big name blues acts whenever it can. Jimmy Thackery, Bob Margolin, and Sandra Hall are just a few of the blues folks that come through. Local bands that frequent the Grill include: The Uptown Funk All Stars, Blitzkrieg, Direct Attention, and Three Sided Soul. Roots-rock and blues covers are much appreciated by the crowd. The "band" room is rectangular, long, and has a modest stage. The soundman booth has been placed in a perfect location opposite the stage. It's one of the more well planned stages in town and was designed specifically for low key, acoustic or semi acoustic acts. They even have spoken word open stages. Matt Says: Opening in January 2007, the new Front Room replaces the old front room in the old Baker Center. This is a brand spankin' new coffee house in a huge multi-million dollar student center that looks a lot like a shopping mall. The stage is located in front of a huge fire place. They have an excellent sound system with overhead monitors. The surfaces in the venue are mostly made of wood, so sound reflects all over the place. That's not a problem for most quiet bands and solo-artists. It is a popular coffee house, so I've seen many people show up and talk over acoustic performances, or walk out of full bands because they can't talk while they drink coffee. That said, this place would be a good place to play as part of a fest, or if you play the sort of music that goes well with conversation. Random AMN User Comments: Poop-o-Meeter: (Can you poop here?) Matt Says: For those of you living in a cave for the last 40 years. Jorma Kaukonen was the original guitarist for the psychedelic rock group, Jefferson Airplane. Ever since then he's built up a name for himself as an acoustic blues guitarist as well as the guitarist for Hot Tuna. Fur Peace Station is owned by Jorma and his wife. It is located on the Fur Peace Ranch. It's not named after the anti-fur movement, but is instead a play on words. "Furpeace" being Appalachian slang for "something that is located just a little farther down the road than near." The ranch is located half way between Pomeroy and Athens in a town called Darwin on RT 33 and features many great national musicians. The ranch also is a spa and fantasy camp of sorts. You can learn how to play guitar or bass from nationally recognized masters. The station is a large auditorium that can hold a couple hundred. Stadium seating (like at newer mega-movie-theaters). Nothing at the ranch is inexpensive, but nothing this cool ever comes cheap. For lessons, relaxation, good food and music, check out the ranch. G.E. Matt Says: This bar has been around for quite a while and has been listed in many prominent biker magazines as a cool place to park your Harley and drink for a while. Fridays and Saturdays you will usually hear blues, blues-rock, or gritty roadhouse music. However, Thursdays seems to be college night. Anything goes on Thursdays. Jam, Rock, Punk... it's all been done. 2 strange things about this place. The stage is TINY. By that I mean that the stage is just a little bigger than a full size pool table. Many bands with extra members set up on the stage as well as the floor. Also, this place closes an hour early. I guess they sold their hour to Tony's, another bar in town that has no live bands, but stays open an extra hour. If you are the first band on a three band bill at the Skull, prepare to go on stage at 9 PM and also prepare to get shafted on the crowd. Tip for bands starting at 9: BYOC -- Bring your own crowd! It's best to call the Smiling Skull from 10 am to 5pm if you want to get booked. One last tip: THE BAR DOES NOT HAVE ITS OWN PA! You have to bring your own PA if anyone wants to hear your singer! Many big-time indie bands have played at the Union over the years. Some acts that have played the Union include The Ataris, Man Man, The Black Keys, The White Stripes, HUM, ENON, NRBQ, and many more. However, more bands of different genres play the Union's well-worn stage than one might think. Everything from hip-hop, to funk, to jam has found a home on the Union's large and grungy stage. The Union is an ALL AGES venue upstairs where the bands play and has one of the better sound systems in town for rock bands. It also features a very large, sheltered stage which has been raised 3 feet above the crowd. Benefits of the barn: it could be raining outside and the band and up to a thousand fans can stay dry. The barn has no side walls or heat of it's own, you're basically outside under the equivalent of a giant tent. So, if it's cold outside, your going be cold too. The quality of sound depends on the PA that you bring, but it usually sounds pretty sweet. Peach Melba holds their bi-annual Peach Tree gatherings at the barn.
