What has happened to the only blues club in Athens? When they opened a few years ago they were to be dedicated in blues. They were for awhile and they were successful. Then they became greety, they no longer wanted to pay their musicians. They wanted to pay them by the door only. They hired someone to book their bands, this man continued to beat the bands out of money. This man even tried scams as throwing the biggest concert in Athens, Screwing many muicians once again He brought to the blues club not blues but every form of music. This will be great for a regular venue but it will be the downfall for our blues club. The venues in the 60's and 70's belived in paying their musicians, with a low cover charge, in return they hiked up their drinks by $.50 They were always packed 5 nights a week. Their customers came in and stayed. Now the venues especially the so called blues club have hiked their drinks plus charge an outrageous cover for the students, they have been very greety . The studens are the core of downtown Athens, The students keep the music going, If it weren't for students the venues would have no business. The bands would no longer be playing. I asked th students to take pride and demand a change in the venue owners! Have more house concerts and quit supporting the venues that only care about themselves! |

questions- What did the students say when you asked them? Did they find new venue owners for the clubs? AND Why arent there more blues house-shows? I got the blues real bad, and I need me a gig. |

One more word babies - GIG DoubleGold will be playing at THE UNION with BEAT THE DEVIL and FRESHKILLS on January 31st. We will sing our tasty blues there for you. Why for aren't there more local blues bands playing the blues/jazzfest? Is there a shortage of local blues acts? We are students of the bloose. We like it sweet and tasty like cotton candy, then down and dirty like poopoo dawgzz. Don't miss us on the 31st at the club. -DG |

I love duck1002. He doesn't always make sense, but the man has passion! And boy can he hold a grudge. He's had a bone to pick with the gator about getting dissed on some door money for YEARS. Pretty much everyone who might have ever been responsible for that mishap has moved on... but still he carries that torch. He's like the last angry man in Ohio. He's basically the Dennis Kucinich of the music scene. Keep on running, man. I don't agree with you more times than not, but like I said... the passion. :-P |

There is logic behind not have more local acts, We had local acts scheduled to play, but places like the Union and Jackie O's canceled them out. The Athens Convention Centers wisdom was they wanted to bring in some heavy duty groups that no one has ever heard. Local bands can be heard anytime, the talent that we have brought in are all professional and kick ass.Not saying the locals arent' but believe me there is more than Athens Ohio, go to Michigan, cherokee Iowa, washington DC, And you will see what I mean. I din't mention the Blue Gator, I happen to have two OU Grad musicians in the group, they happen to agree, the venue owners screw the local talent, as long as the locals put up with it It is OK, But I want better..PD |

I have no grudge with Joel or The Blue Gator, Only the idiot that has screwed every musician in town one time or another. He is no longer there. If you like being screwed by another male go for it. Joel is cool. Joel personally has done nothing to me, just hired the wrong people to do his bookings. If I were managing the bookings and the allocated funds for advertisment you'd see a change. |

I book The Union. No one ever contacted me directly about the Blues Fest. I didn't cancel anything, or anyone - just to set the record straight. Good luck with all of that. What venues are you talking about when you say you've been screwed over? Not us - I've never dealt with ya. Thanks! -Scott |

Scott, the promotion material was dorpped off at the Union 3 different times, I can honestly belive maybe that you may have never received it,I can't help that your co-workersdidn't forward the info to you. But we had no responce from the Union,What eles are we to think, If we had we would have been more than happy to have you aboard, For Christ Sakes can't people in Athens just get along, Everyone has opinion, I respect opinions, If I burn bridges it's too bad. The Venue owners are cheap and don't give a damn about the musicians, Im borned and raised in Athens,The outsiders have come into Athens bought business. I challange all the bar owners to start paying no less than $400 per night on up, Either put up or shut up, |

I have not said one word about the Casa, we even made sure that Mark Peder will be at the Casa for at least 3 hours preforming. The Casa has been very helpful, Did you know that Burning Bridges was a song that made the charts many years ago! In fact, The Casa has got one of te good venues with great sound! |

casa's sound is good...but not great. they need to get their system tuned up for the room. it's a little too harsh in the high end. people sitting in the corners of the bar have it the worst honestly i'm just happy that people are talking shit on this website again and it's getting interesting again...did you read that we march post???? thats juicy like, "super nintento, sega genesis, when i was dead broke man i couldn't picture this..." ahhh what were we talking about? |

All I was saying was that I never discussed the bluesfest with anyone, therefore I didn't CANCEL anything (as stated in your previous post). I'm also an Athens native and I've been booking The Union for a LONG time. I've never dealt with you - when you make generalizations about venues in town - leave us out of it please, as you have had no bad dealings with us. Actually, it makes no difference to me really - of course you are entitled to your opinion. I just thought it was strange that you would talk so much smack about venues in town, while simultaneously trying to promote a local multi-venue event. Mainly though, I was just pointing out that we didn't cancel anything, as we never booked it to begin with. On that note - good luck - I hope everything works out for all the venues involved. Now how about those down & dirty poopoo dawgzz? jeezuz! -Scott |

Like I said before, I did stop by on 3 different occasions. I gave the staff at the bar all the info with my contact. I never heard a word back. I wish you could've been apart of the Festival. The Casa has supported it with persuading.I have placed 2 nights of good music and fun or the Casa.It will be a good festival. This Festival is advertised with the Blues Alliances through-out the state, also in Columbus, Lancaster, Cincinnati, Marietta, Parkersburg and all over the net. We will be having one next year.I'd like to get all venues involved. We will be bringing Mark back for the school program, also Kathy Farmer a Jazz singer-pianist from New York. She has played with all the greats. I guess Im upset because a couple of the good local bands got cut because of venues that dropped out. Thee will be equal local groups along with national acts involved. Please cme to the Casa Feb 1, if you are a musician your welcome to jam. duck |

thats the greatest avatar I ever seen. I want to book it at my house for $50, now I ain't being greety cause I've said hello to Michigan and Warshington D.C and seen them reptilian flesh eating prostitutes and I know the local avatar is only going to shoot up my house and pee in the corners while Curty's granny is lonely and Neil is an amazing punk rock bassist with the best punk rock faces and if he ever messed up I didn't notice because I was too busy punching Zach in the kidneys and if only MLK Jr. could be resurrected to walk the streets of Athens and get people to hold hands regardless of color or class or musical preference and little punk rock girls and little venue booking boys could finger each other in rhythm to chiming bar cash registers...I have a dream, of a $400 guarantee |

Chris, no they didn't except we were suppose to have the whole night. The band were bringing in are fabalous, There a bunch of old school musicians like Jim Smailes and John Borchard that kick ass when it comes to Blues and Jazz, They were cut from 10 til 2 to 6:pm to 8, We do appericiate the 2 hours, but your really missing a good show, Pluse Mark Pender would have been in there playing with them. Maybe next time we can get together and talk before hand, My understanding from Art was it would be the whole evening. Just a misunderstanding. I really wanted to get more local groups involved. But this is a small festival this year, we can all learn for the future. Hopefully next year we can get 10 venues, they don't all have to be in the bars, We just want it uptown. I will also be needing help in the high school again next year. Have a good night. Duck1002 |

for the record, casa cantina offered to help organize or at least offer input toward this event from the time we were asked to be involved (july i believe). we were ignored and then rudely told that it was someone else's event and to basically mind our own business (that is putting it nicely). and, please don't make me post the emails to prove that this is what took place. |

Yes Tim you did want imput, you wanted to choose your own band, thats not what any of us wanted in this festival, This is for fresh acts being brought into Athens so as people could have a change. There are many fine acts in our local venue. Some people are tired of the same ol same ol. Have you ever came to us and ask for our help, Hell no you snubed people from your own comunity up in Nelsonville.(Lady Kay Carter) When have you ever tried helping out the schools with programs, if it don't make you money it ain't happening. Ive done this for our community,You should be happy. Are you afraid of competition? Get over it or kiss my ass! This is the last time I'll be posting, if you want to talk, meet me like a man and we will discuss this, I have no time for people with shallow minds. You know my number call me. Im tired of the bullshit, I fought for this country like so many others and alot of my friends so people with you ingnorance could have liberties, but Im too old to listen to any more of your whining. |

What is this all about? It started just trying to get the venues to look at ways they can pay there bands. And trying to let people know how Athens use to be!There were venues that pulled out of the festival, unfortunately causing the Convention Bureau to cancel some local acts. The locals acts were people we all knew, One of the venues did volunteer to help, but they wanted to take charge, I'm only trying to set up a nice Winter Festival with a national act and bring in a little new talent into town to entertain,It seems like the good musicians in this town would want that. I always enjoy good acts. Judge me if you may but please don't judge until you see the finish product. If this works it will be back next year bigger and better with more local acts,Yes mistakes will be made in the infancy year, but we learn from mistakes. We will have 2 national acts next year, If you'd like information about them feel free to call me anytime, But enough of the negativity, it's not good or in the best interest of the town. Thank You duck |

duck, i'm with on finding different ways to pay the performers and pay them well. no cover/50 cent drink hike could be a good idea. But do you think it's a good idea to talk shit in public about the venues, and booking people? will that help you get more venues next year? |
|
duck1002@hotmail.com
|
No and I appolize, believe me where we have been playing they do hike the drinks, they are packed all evening, no one complaining abount not wanting to pay a cover, Everyone that wants in gets in. If each person spends an average of $10.00 and they are full all night, then both the venues and the musicians make out.If we all work together then everyone benefits.Think about the venues that don't charge a cover up town, and that doesn't have live music, those people would more than likely be at the music venues if it wern't for the cover. Please come to the festival, come see Mark, he is really an entertainer you will be glad, Like I said before, I didn't mean to step on anyones toes.I have a hard time expressing myself sometimes and people take things I say the wrong way. "I have no grudge with Joel or The Blue Gator, Only the idiot that has screwed every musician in town one time or another. He is no longer there. If you like being screwed by another male go for it. Joel is cool." -Duck 1. I love music in many forms and I don't know who you're reffering to in that phrase, or of any idiot who has "screwed" EVERY musician in town. 2. I respect accomplished musicians. 3. Sometimes I LIKE to be "screwed" by ANOTHER male. 4. Obviously, "Screwed" doesn't mean what it did in '63. (You know, kinda like how "cool" hain't what is was in '56). Likewise, Athens isn't what it used to be. 5. Good luck with the festival..........I just hope I don't have to work during it. On a side note: Who would ever have sex with Joel? |

This thread is absolutely out of control. First, I (speaking as a member of a band that plays out often as has played lots of other places in addition to Athens) do not think any local musician is expecting $400 a show. It would be nice, in our experience we have been happy with what we get and more so happy with the opportunity to play music for people, we enjoy doing that. Aquabear Legion is a collective of bands, musicians, and artists that has worked for over 3 years in helping promote local music. I was inspired to do this in the first place BECAUSE of the great musicians, bands, venues, and people here. Those people include every single person you have insulted and shit-talked on here. This scene is unified, and we ALL work together to have great bands (many of whom are local) and great shows and events. I do not know what Athens you are looking at. It is possible that you feel this way about this town, the venues, etc.. because of your attitude towards it (you seem to be a little self-absorbed about how great you are for doing this... "you should be kissing my ass" "thanking me" etc..). Musicians make music because they/we love to do it. Venues have shows because it brings people into their business and provides great entertainment for its patrons and also helps to support a live music and arts scene in this town. I think that is pretty simple. You do seem to be burning bridges, and it is never a good idea (regardless of how you may feel) to put personal beefs onto a public forum that will in effect harm your event (which is what you should ALWAYS care about as a promoter). If you believed in this festival as much as you say you do, I think you would stop shit-talking the people who have worked with you on it or may in the future. I wish you the best for the festival, I think almost anything done here is a great thing for the community. But you should not be airing these crude and poorly written complaints against folks who you are trying to work with and in a community you are holding an event.. it just is not good for anyone. |

First. I want to let duck and everyone else know that this is NOT Tim Peacock, but Brian Koscho a full-time AmeriCorps VISTA volunteer at Stuart's Opera House in Nelsonville. For the record as well, I also help run Aquabear Legion, play in Casual Future and have been fortunate enough to be a part of the music community here in Athens for around 6 years as a musician, fan, and a promoter. I was appalled by what you seemed to say about the Opera House and Tim and our role in the Athens County community and in Nelsonville specifically. Stuart's brings programs (music, art, theater, dance, and more) to students in this area (and the community as well) both in the schools and by bringing them into Stuart's itself. In the last year our programs with students probably reached around 4,000 kids in an area that can always use more art, music, and cultural education. We are currently involved in a two year program with a group called Arts Midwest Worldfest which brings four groups to Nelsonville (and about 10 other towns in the Midwest) over two years from all over the world to be musicians in residence for a week at a time. These groups are from Mexico, Israel, French Canada, and China. We are actually doing one of them (Esta from Israel) this week in Nelsonville Schools (preK-12), the Athens County Public Libraries, and the Front Room. We also worked with ARTS/West and all of the previous mentioned places the last time a group was here in October from Mexico. Between just the first two groups we estimate over 2,000 kids were involved alone. Also, we had a summer art camp here at Stuart's that was put on by galleries on the Square here in Nelsonville. And have several plays and performances just for students each year. And NONE of this is done to make money... because we are a NON-PROFIT. We just want to keep our doors open and keep providing arts and music to our community, that's all. Tim has done some amazing things with Stuart's in the last several years and all of it was done with the community in mind. Just thought I would get the facts straight. Thanks. |

First off -- I want to emphasize how excited we all are that there will actually BE a Jazz & Blues Fest happening in Athens! It is going to be a great event. If you want to learn more about what will be taking place and where, please go to www.athensohio.com/jazzfest -- this is the Visitors Bureau's website. Actually, the Visitors Bureau is the one hosting the event; not duck1002 or R&B Station. While we are very much looking forward to having R&B Station play throughout the festival, duck's opinions do not reflect how the Visitors Bureau feels about our area venues or musicians. I can not say enough wonderful things about the venues working with us to make this festival happen. We really do have some fun bands coming in to play. It would be great to see people from the AMN come out in impressive numbers and support the event so we can continue to put on bigger and bigger events here in Athens in the future. |

I'm not your typical AMN bulletin board contributor, but the recent conversational string on music venues and the upcoming Feb. Jazz and Blues Fest has motivated this post. Although I appreciate every individual's point of view, I am alarmed that one of the individuals promoting the Jazz and Blues Fest could actually be sabotaging its fledgling success as an event. Maybe this conversation instigated by "Duck" is a "marketing as confrontation" device that I simply don't get. But I would like to add that the Athens County Convention and Visitors Bureau staff has gone to great measures to support and market the Jazz and Blues event for the benefit of the community. Although I think many of us involved can agree that the event activities have not gone as smoothly and as preparedly planned as we first conceived, I had hoped we could resolve to get beyond some those issues. I think many of us would have liked to have seen more venues involved and local musicians showcased this year. If that continues to be a future goal than open and respectful communication serves as a more professional model to meet those ends. As a venue owner we will be more likely to respect your concerns if they are presented to us in a less inflamatory style of communication. Although we may not always meet our own standards all the time, I think I can say that Casa within our business practices holds the best intentions to support the musicians, performers and artists we work with, resect the desires of our customers and community, and still support ourselves as a viable business. Locally owned businesses will only thrive or for that matter survive if we can figure out how to collaborate well together. So call me pollyanna, but can't we try to make this event work this year. thanks Leslie |

Once again I'm apploizing, But in my own defence, I will tell you, that I have had several calls at to home concering bands being canceled,I told all of them to express their concerns with the ACCVB.I was told that I wouldn't be blamed for this. Im sorry that this happened,I have worked very hard to get this event sponsored.I worked for 3 years planing and trying to get this event. Paige revived my hopes and made this come true. Paige and her staff has worked very hard to try and make it happen , I thank them all for sponsoring this great event. If anyone has any comncerns just please call the ACCVB, Im only working on the school event right now which makes me very happy. It was suppose to be made very clear that I had nothing to do with it,When peeople call me and blame me for things I didn't do I get upset.Lets all pull together and have a great festival. Im sure next year that the mistakes that we made this year will not be made next. It's called lack of communication,So please accept my appology once again, I want to thank everyone that is helping this event come to life. duck |
