O.K I was there last night but not because I was there to celebrate it's demise but because I had just gotten in to town from spending a whole weekend in columbus, and my ride needed carry-out beers.... I saw all the kids partying and shit, and didn't think too much of it when I left.

While in C-Bus i had checked this board and saw matt's union posting, I wasn't upset, more like "oh yeah whatever here we go again". After the last closing fiasco I learned to be a bit wary of these things and even after speaking with an employee this morning, who had told me of Lou's own words about closing, I'm still not totally convinced. If lou does sell, it's because he hasn't had his own finger on the pulse of that place in far too long.

Also I think it's real dick move to pull the carpet out from under the regulars and employees like that.. A proper celebration with one last show is in order and if we don't get one that'll be pretty sad considering people's hard work and fanatical devotion to the place...somehow though
I don't see how anybody could have the nerve to do something that shitty to an entire town...

maybe they're just trying to drum up business with hysteria...that was the busiest sunday I've seen in years.... then again I think everybody is fired...oh wait there we go maybe they're just cleaning house...naw.. now I'm just conspiracy theorizing.. anyway, just like last time, anyone who buys the place isn't gonna turn that shit into apts. or a restaraunt as we all know the union barely makes code as it is and to bring that building up to code for anything other than a seedy dive bar would cost too much... and if you can't do anything else with it then why
even bother closing it?...

WORST CASE SCENARIO: Lou sells the bar and some douchebag buys it and tries to do something unacceptable to change it.
SOLUTION: keep going there (aggressively )until said douchebag realizes where their business comes from.
BEST CASE SCENARIO: matt toledo wins the lottery and buys it...because frankly I'm fed up with
closing rumours every couple years, the systematic firing of every good bar manager that place ever had( ms. trembly and mr. stamp please stand up) and the way it's been run for the last two or three years..

Ok, Pencil. Next time you come to Columbus you better call and hang the fuck out. I have a nice place right around the corner from the best underground music venue in Columbus, not to mention their sweet 1.50 happy hour liquor deals.

i talked to matt today and he said he heard from winland that none of the shows are cancelled, but the bar is closed, which doesn't make much sense. its probably for blackoutfest. yippee skippy. he also said that lou might be hiring a whole new staff. fucking scabs. i say we boycott the fuck out of the place so that lou has to sell it as cheap as possible, and then we can all buy it, like some crappy 80's movie.

With regard to minimizing costs it really doesn't make much sense to fire your entire staff and then spend time and money retraining new employees. But what do I know, it's not my business.

THIS WAS POSTED BY COURTNEY ON MYSPACE

Mar 18, 2008 5:05 PM
Press Release from Lou: It is one of the greatest pleasures of my life for many years to be able to provide The Union Bar and Grill as a unique venue which strives to provide a comfortable setting on the cultural cutting edge where all individuals can find refuge from the conformity of the status quo and which provides people an experience that makes them happy and wanting to return. I am a Major in the Army in which I have served over nineteen years and I have spent over the last four years away from home on active duty, first as the operations officer for a battalion responsible for training Soldiers deploying to Iraq and Afghanistan and returned only last week as operations officer for the Counterinsurgency Center For Excellence at Camp Taji, Iraq where I was responsible for the counterinsurgency training program for every Brigade Combat Team which deployed to Iraq over the last six months. During the time of my deployment my wife has been raising our three year old daughter, and trying to finish her graduate schooling while trying to give our staff direction in what little time she has available. Unfortunately, due to my lengthily deployments and my wifes obligations at home, we have not been able to provide day to day oversight and had to rely on the staff to provide an inviting atmosphere and positive relations with our patrons. In our absence the bar's structure did not serve to maintain. The bar will temporally close for reorganization and restructuring to better serve my original vision for the Union Bar and Grill. I have also discussed the possibility of sale with several parties. The bar will reopen on Friday for already schedule shows.

The A-News editor posted this in the general discussion: http://www.athensnews.com/news/breakingnews/2008/mar/18/union-bar-take-hiatus-may-be-sold/

Smaller quote of what was just said, plus more quotes from Courtney. Miss you Pencil, I am coming out of my winter seasonal disorder. We can drink on porches soon.

hey non-prophet, sorry man, I don't know you, I just reacted to knowing a lot of the situation, and the hard times Lou is having with this, that most folks here don't know about.

...and if you really think about it no business owner owes anything to anyone, not legally anyway and while I am critical of many practices in our capitalistic system, and the way it makes people treat people, I think we can all say that Lou and the union have nurtured a large part of the athens' music scene, while being a cheap place to drink as well!.

I worked at the union for a couple few years and I met many people during that time that I think will be my friends for years to come. The first ever show I got to see there was Econothugs(Columbus.), Bargoyle(athens ..you better act like ya' know) and some band we missed, back in high school, so I've been coming here long before living in athens which has been about six years....I don't plan to leave athens anytime soon hopefully the union isn't either.
